AWS is seeking a Corporate level Strategy and Business Development leader within our AWS Strategy & BD team. This leader will focus on various the industries across Amazon and AWS, but with a primary focus on Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), generally focused on the top companies in this segment, globally. This is a unique opportunity to join a centralized corporate strategy and BD team that manages strategic partnerships across all of Amazon with AWS customers. This person will be responsible for assessing inbound requests and prioritizing opportunities against total commercial impact, independently manage opportunities end-to-end (commonly the most complex challenges in never-been-done before deals), and seeing complex and high impact partnership through to completion. This will require precise, routine communication (written and verbal) with executives across AWS and Amazon, and will require a heavy focus on Amazon writing and articulating strategy with data. An in-depth knowledge of how CPG customers operate and interact with the Retail environment (both business to business and direct to consumer), distribution strategy, marketing, and logistics is critical. This will enable the person to engage across Amazon in a meaningful way to improve the experience for our customers and partners. The person will need a strong commercial aptitude, and be able to quickly identify best in class partnerships that are valuable and high impact for both Amazon and for Amazon Web Services (AWS). They will also manage executive relationships and negotiate partnership deals that are unconventional, need a centralized advocate, and/or have broader implications to AWS and other Amazon business units that are not immediately obvious. Rolling up the sleeves and managing the day to day on partnerships is expected, while being able to switch between tactical execution and Thinking Big to develop net-new opportunities.
This key role will be highly visible at the most senior levels of AWS and Amazon and work on some of our most vexing challenges, and work collaboratively with many internal teams. You’ll at times need to be fearless in moving forward without a clear path, and be comfortable defining new partnership models.
The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex problems where there is no clearly defined path to success, and isn't frustrated by a lack of clarity. Effective communication (written and verbal) at the executive level is exceptionally important. This individual must be able to work effectively with cross-functional teams and thrives in a fast-paced setting that is constantly evolving and isn’t dissuaded when they hear “no” or frustrated by shifting landscapes. Finally, as our deals are atypical, we require a leader who is comfortable defining goals that align to the right business outcomes, and is exceptionally comfortable driving the right outcomes with little guidance.
This is a great role for someone with both industry experience and is a deep subject matter expert, ideally who has owned a P&L and worked on outsized partnerships, and has depth in strategy and/or Corporate Development.
Key job responsibilities
• Take the lead to identify, define, evaluate, negotiate, and manage partnerships that can involve marketing, content, commerce, and technology components.
• Regularly write/own strategy documents including financial assessments on the Risks and Opportunities of large partnership motions and their most likely impacts.
• Understand and be a subject matter expert on a group of Amazon business units, and what is most important to their strategy.
• Assess commercial feasibility of ideas and then form appropriate (often novel) deal constructs.
• Evaluate the economic and strategic cost-benefits of partnerships with a 360 market view.
• At times lead cross-functional initiatives across Product, Operations, Legal, Finance, Tax, Accounting, and senior management to execute on the relationships.
• Support the strategic objectives and interests of Amazon’s business teams on a global basis.
A day in the life
You'll engage with teams across Amazon and AWS daily, working to understand the emerging challenges and how we can jointly solve them. A normal day may include writing a strategy whitepaper, managing an ongoing partnership with c-suite executives, developing a new technical integration with building systems or a new logistics partnership, working with internal and external technical resources to define how an emerging technology may solve large joint challenges, or negotiating the key terms of a deal/partnership.
AWS Strategy and Business Development is a small, tight-knit team that values authentic, strong willed individuals that think creatively and will proactively seek out opportunities to advance the growth initiatives of Amazon’s businesses.
